Anthem Public Beta Impressions

Anthem Public Beta

The Anthem public beta demo was this weekend and my initial thoughts are “Ok, what if Dragon Age, but in space?”

If someone had told me this was set in the same extended universe as Dragon Age but set 10,000 years in the future, I would believe it. Everything feels like a BioWare game, but unfortunately more Dragon Age 2 than Dragon Age Origins. There’s a central hub. There’s a map screen for plotting out the next mission. There are a plethora of NPC allies that lead you through the story.

Anthem itself handles a lot like Halo but with flying. That is to say, it feels like a console-based shooter from the early 2000s. Flying feels like it should be more fun. It can only be done in short bursts and is not very easy to control. The “loot” system feels tacked on and clunky.

At the end of the first mission there is a McGuffin that needs to be retrieved. It can only be retrieved by solving a puzzle by manipulating big Stargate-esque circles to display the correct color sequence. What is the sequence? Perhaps it was explained in voice-over from the NPCs in your earpiece, but the game audio completely cutout halfway through the mission so I really don’t know. I had to stumble around trying to find any sort of clue for 15 minutes. I eventually had to Google it. That’s not great.

Anthem is being developed by BioWare Edmonton and published by Electronic Arts. It’s due to be released on February 22, 2019.
